Compulsory
1. General information
This subject covers the medical and surgical pathology of the respiratory and nervous system. The block of the Nervous System is the basis for the student to be able to establish the diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutic attitude of the main diseases of the Nervous System. In addition, it aims to define the relationships that exist with other pathologies unrelated to it.
The pathology of the respiratory system includes diseases of high prevalence that every medical professional should know, both for a professional performance in primary care and for an eventual dedication to various medical or surgical specialties or to clinical research.
These approaches and objectives are aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations Agenda 2030 (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/) Goal 4: Quality education
2. Learning results
In order to pass this subject, the students shall demonstrate they has acquired the following results:
NERVOUS SYSTEM
In the subject of Nervous System, the student, after having passed this specialization, should achieve the following results:
1.To assess the clinical data and basic complementary examinations of the main neurological and neurosurgical pathologies.
2. To identify the main diseases that require neurological or neurosurgical care, differentiating those that can be treated in the Primary Care setting from those that should be referred to Specialized Care.
3. To establish the correct guidelines for the initial treatment of the different pathologies of the nervous system, form and priority of the assistance in the different structures of the health system.
4. To formulate well-founded diagnoses of the most frequent neurological diseases on the basis of integrating clinical data and others coming from the complementary tests applicable in each case.
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
The student, after passing the topics corresponding to the Respiratory System, of the subject that includes the Medical and Surgical Pathology of the Respiratory System and the Nervous System, acquires the following knowledge and skills:
1.To know the characteristic and most significant aspects of pneumological pathology: Major pneumological syndromes . Respiratory infections. Obstructive respiratory pathology, interstitial, tumour bronchopulmonary, pleural and vascular. Traumatic thoracic, mediastinal and diaphragmatic pathology and basic principles of thoracic surgery.
2. To apply and perfect the knowledge and skills previously acquired to be able to suspect and recognize in a patient, from symptoms and inspection, percussion and auscultation data (especially the most significant in respiratory diseases), the existence of a pneumological process.
3. To know the name and fundamental applications of the most commonly used complementary tests specific for the diagnosis of respiratory diseases: blood gases, imaging techniques, spirometry, bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, external oximetry, sleep records, cytology, microbiological and serological techniques.
4. To formulate well-founded diagnoses of the most frequent respiratory diseases on the basis of integrating clinical data and other data from the complementary tests applicable in each case.
5. To propose the usual treatment measures for the most frequently treated diseases, at various stages of their evolution, in the primary care setting (infections, COPD, asthma, pulmonary thromboembolism , among others).
6. To identify the basic guidelines for the treatment of other respiratory diseases less prevalent than those mentioned or that are preferably treated in the specialized care setting, among those included in the theoretical program of this subject.
Students must maintain a commitment to confidentiality with respect to the information received during the internship with patients in health centres
3. Syllabus
NERVOUS SYSTEM BLOCK
A. Face-to-face teaching (50%): 50 hours including classes in large groups, Seminars-Workshops and Internships in the centres associated to UNIZAR.
B. Non-attendance teaching (50 %): 50 hours. Personal study of the student based on the different sources of information and individual work.
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM BLOCK
A. Face-to-face teaching (50%): 62 hours including classes in large groups, Seminars-Workshops and Internships in the centres associated to UNIZAR.
B. Non-attendance teaching (50 %): 62 hours. The student's personal study based on the different sources of information and individual work.
4. Academic activities
The subject has a teaching load of 9 ECTS (225 hours) and is taught in the 7th semester.
The Nervous System part has 4 ECTS (100 hours, 50 hours of Neurology and 50 hours of Neurosurgery).
The part of Respiratory System has 5 ECTS (125 hours, 75 hours of Pneumology and 50 hours of Thoracic Surgery).
1.Master Classes 50 h: 25 hours of Nervous System and 25 hours of Respiratory System
2.Seminars-workshops: 18 hours NS and 18 hours Respiratory
3.Clinical practice: Includes 16 hours of Neurology and 16 hours of Respiratory in clinics
4.Tutoring: 6h at the student's request
